PROFILE

KMEC is an established international franchise with an expansion rate of one new centre opening every thirteen days, on average. The International Head Office is based in Australia. It is a listed public company.

The franchise has been in operation for over 25 years and is represented by 680 centres in over 7 countries. There are 67 operational franchises in South Africa. The Head Office owns five of these centres.

We provide specialised tutoring in Reading (Literacy), Phonics, Comprehension, Spelling, English and Mathematics for school-going children between grades 1 to 10.

We also help higher learning students in:

  • - Mathematics - from Grade 1 to Grade 12, including the highest levels of mathematics.
  • - Study Skills - suitable for secondary students and above.
  • - Essay Writing - suitable for senior secondary students and above.
  • - Get Ready For School - suitable for 4 year olds.
  • - Little Learners Program - suitable for 5 and 6 year olds.
  • - Intelligence Development - thinking skills for students from the ages of 10 to 60 years.

In the classroom situation, we use a multi-media, rotational approach and make extensive use of audio and visual materials. The franchisor supplies audio-visual software, audiocassette tapes (converting to DVD), worksheets and 'in-house' textbooks.

We have on average, 120 learners enrolled in our centres at the peak period of the year, with our larger centres growing to over 350 students.

FINANCIALS

R160,000

The Full Size (City) operation costs R160 000

This figure is for a total turnkey setup and includes all upfront costs. It includes a furniture pack, a promotional pack, educational material, administrative and educational software, additional office furniture, computers, advertising costs for two months and some stationery.

The franchisee would also need to budget for travelling to and accommodation in Durban for the training period and would also need working capital for the first month or two of operation.

The investment for small towns and disadvantaged areas is R110 000 and R140 000 according to the potential.

Most franchises reach financial break-even by the third month.

Royalties:   The royalties are a fixed monthly fee which grows on a sliding scale over the first two years of operation. Thereafter it remains constant.

In percentage terms, the AVERAGE franchisee pays in the region of 8% to 12% of turnover for royalties.
